Research profile
Melanocortin receptor signalling and pigmentation
Very small phase 1 study
What it is and why it is studied
Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic peptide investigated in melanocortin research. Melanotan II is studied in the field of melanocortin signalling, including the pathways associated with pigmentation. Early experiments investigated whether its receptor activity translated into measurable biological responses.
What studies have found
A phase 1 pilot involving three men reported pigmentation changes in two participants. Nausea, fatigue and somnolence were also reported, making tolerability an important part of interpreting this small study.
This early experiment does not establish a safe tanning method or the long-term safety of personal use.

The reference peptide is N-acetylated and C-terminally amidated, with an Asp–Lys side-chain lactam ring. Nle means norleucine; D-Phe specifies D-phenylalanine.
Chemical information describes the named reference structure, not a batch analysis or confirmation of the material supplied. Counterions, water and excipients are excluded unless stated.
Understanding these details
A sequence describes the order of residues in a peptide. A molecular formula describes the atoms in the reference structure. Molar mass is expressed in grams per mole; it is not the amount in a vial. CAS numbers and PubChem identifiers help you find the corresponding chemical records.
Selected literature and reference information checked 11 September 2026. Study findings concern the preparations and models described; they do not certify this product. For laboratory research only.
